John O’Bannon, M.D.; MSVPAC Chairman Geoffrey Harter, M.D.; MSV President Dan Carey, M.D.; and Sec. of Health and Human Resources William A. Hazel Jr., M.DThe Medical Society of Virginia Political Action Committee (MSVPAC) hosted a successful political fundraising event for the three physician members of the Virginia House of Delegates on Sept. 16. Over 50 individuals attended the event held at MSV's office representing specialty societies, health care organizations and other lobbying groups. Participants made direct contributions to the legislators.

MSVPAC Chairman Geoff Harter, M.D. and MSV President Dan Carey, M.D. welcomed the guests at the event. Dr. Harter introduced the physician delegates to the attendees and offered each the opportunity to make brief remarks. Dr. Carey highlighted MSV's positive working relationship with these delegates and the leadership roles physicians are playing in both the General Assembly, and in Gov. Bob McDonnell's administration with the appointment of William A. Hazel Jr., M.D. as Secretary of Health and Human Resources and the various other physicians appointed as agency heads in his secretariat.

Sec. Hazel, Scott Johnson, Esq., MSV general counsel, and Matt Mansell, MSV director of government affairs Although 2010 is not an election year for the members of the House of Delegates, candidates like Drs. O'Bannon, Garrett and Stolle hold fundraising events to help them cover the costs of keeping their constituents informed about issues relevant to their districts. They also use the opportunity of events like the one hosted by MSVPAC to build their relationships with key stakeholders who are interested in their legislative priorities. MSVPAC greatly appreciates the support of physicians, medical practices and their spouses that allow MSVPAC to be an effective and highly-regarded political action committee.
